Week 5 Detailed Learning Outcomes
Actuarial Practice #
n/a #
Actuarial Techniques #
Population structure indicators #
You should be able to define, calculate, and explain the meaning of the following indicators:
- Sex ratio - at birth, for an age group, and for the whole population
- Child-woman ratio
- Dependency ratio - age dependecy ratio and youth dependency ratio
- Crude birth rate (CBR)
- Crude death rate (CDR)
- Specific death rates - gender specific, age specific, and class specific
Comparison of mortality between two populations #
You should be able to understand how to transform mortality of two populations (which have a different age structure) so that it is comparable.
Version 1 #
- Calculate the CDR for population
\(A\)
- Calculate the SDR for population
\(B\)
, standardised to population\(A\)
Version 2 #
Calculate and compare the SDR for two populations standardised to a third population
Population pyramids #
You should be able to
- describe the main features of a population pyramid;
- infer some characteristics of a population from its population pyramid (fertility rate, mortality rate, life expectancy, dependency ratios, population growth);
- if two pyramids are given, compare fertility rates, life expectancy, dependency ratios, population growth, etc;
- construct a population pyramid using Excel if data is given.
